Mercy Hospital & Medical Center will present the fourth annual Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Perinatal Depression Conference the University Club of Chicago on Friday, October 17, 2008. The purpose of the conference is to help healthcare providers identify patients with perinatal depression and evolve the education of professionals involved with their management.

"Women's Voices: Understanding the mental health issues of women and girls". Panelists for the conference will be experts Dr. Laura Miller, Director of the Women's Mental Health Program at the University of Illinois-Chicago,  and Mary Jo Barrett, MSW, Executive Director of the Center for Contextual Change. Joining the panel will be Tracy Harris, an internationally renown flutist who suffers from schizoaffective disorder.  There will be numerous discussion groups and closing remarks by Rev. Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Perinatal Depression Conference
October 17, 2007 -- Mercy Hospital & Medical Center presented the Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Perinatal Depression Conference at the University Club of Chicago on October 17, 2007 from 7:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The purpose of the conference is to help healthcare providers identify patients with perinatal depression and evolve the education of professionals involved with their management.  Mayor Richard M. Daley lauded the event.

"My wife Maggie and I are proud to add our voices to those attending this conference in support of the work of the PPD Foundation and in the memory of Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling," said Mayor Daley. "By partnering with Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, this event emphasizes the importance of educating the medical community about postpartum depression."

Speakers included:

  • Zachary Stowe, M.D., Director of Women's Health at Emery University School of Medicine
  • Shaila Misri, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry & Obstetrics/Gynecology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC
  • Lisa Rone, M.D., Professor of Psychiatrity at Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University
  • Laura Miller, M.D., Department of Psychiatrity at the University of Illinois at Chicago
  • Jennifer L. Payne, M.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatrity and Co-Director of the Women's Mood Disorders Center at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

To further the reach of the conference's initiative, the Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Foundation sponsored presenter Dr. Zachary Stowe's Grand Rounds at Mercy Hospital. President of Postpartum Support International, Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, LCSW, gave a legislative update at the conference, and again during Grand Rounds at Evanston Northwestern Hospital when she introduced speaker Dr. Shaila Misri the day after the conference.

Approximately 200 healthcare providers and supporters attended the conference, which was covered by the Chicago Sun-Times.

 

Annual Postpartum Support International Conference
June 20-23, 2007 -- The 21st annual conference in Kansas City, MO delievered timely information from highly qualified sources addressing current community solutions, interventions and treatment options for perinatal mental health. Speakers included: Ruta Nonacs, MD, PhD; Cheryl Beck, CNM, Lynn Callister, RN, PhD; and Dr. Laura Miller. 

Scholarship for Healthcare Professionals: Essay Contest
June 20, 2007 -- Congratulations to Olga M. Tolscik, M.D., MPH from Amarillo, Texas! The Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Postpartum Depression Foundation granted Dr. Tolscik a scholarship to attend the 21st Annual Postpartum Support International Conference, which took place June 20-23, 2007. In her winning essay, Dr. Tolscik wrote that she planned to use the knowledge gained at the conference to "learn how to best empower women to obtain the services they need to get better." Additionally, she planned to "encourage prental and postnatal screening and promote algorithms for clinicians to follow to get women help in a timely matter."

November 8, 2006 -- Mercy Hospital and Medical Center presented the Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Perinatal Depression Conference at the University Club of Chicago from 8:30a.m. to 3 p.m. This medical conference featured experts including: Laura J.Miller, M.D.; Katherine L. Wisner, M.D., M.S.; Kathleen A. Kendall-Tacket, PH.D, IBCLC; Joyce R. Miller, M.D. D.A.B.N.P.; Rohitkumar Vasa, M.D.; President, Postpartum Support International, Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, LCSW, John J. Walsh III, B.A. J.D. and
Mary Jo Codey, former first lady of New Jersey, also spoke at the conference. Healthcare professionals were eligible for ACME and Continuing Education credits.

Roger Ebert Presents the Alternative Academy Awards  

March 23, 2006 -- the Foundation hosted its first benefit at
The Arts Club of Chicago. In addition to Roger Ebert's feature presentation "The Alternative Oscars," Chaz Ebert presented the Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Postpartum Depression
Award for Courage to Brooke Shields for her work to increase awareness of postpartum depression disorders.

Forum on Postpartum Disorders
May 12, 2006 -- this Forum included a presentation entitled "Protecting Mothers, Babies and Families," by Laura Miller, MD; and a presentation entitled "Prevention and Research," by Lucy Martinez-Schallmoser, PhD, RN.  Additonal speakers included Cardinal Francis George, OMI, Nancy L. Rago Durbin, MS, RNc, as well as a panel of two survivors of postpartum depression disorders and the Carol Blocker, the mother of Melanie Stokes who died of postpartum psychosis. The Forum was sponsored by the Archdiocesan Office for Councils, Archdiocesan Women's Committee, Advocate Healthcare Parish Nurse Ministry, Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Foundation, Catholic Charities, Family Ministries and Our Lady of the Wayside Parish.

Depression and Anxiety Disorders during Pregnancy and Postpartum: Diagnosis and Medical Management
March 11, 2006 -- the staff of the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Perinatal Depression Program hosted a seminar at Evanston Hospital presented by Laura Miller, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Miller is Associate Head and Director of Clinical Services of the Dept. of Psychiatry and Director of the UIC Women's Mental Health Program, winner of the American Psychiatric Association's Gold Achievement Award and the American College of Psychiatrists' Award for Creativity in Psychiatric Education.

November 3, 2005 -- the staff of the Jennifer Mudd Houghtaling Postpartum Depression Program of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare hosted a forum at Evanston Hospital. Presented by Jean O'Mahoney, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the talk explored the reciprocal relationship between postpartum depression and marital relationships.
